About This Answer
A questioner, picking up an earlier remark that teachers used psychic power to see what monks wore in the Buddha's time, asks whether such teachers could also see what the Buddha looked like, and whether his hair resembled that of Buddha images. Ajahn Dtun says those with such powers can know these things but do not make them generally known, because most people without such powers dispute or deny what is said.
He explains that when the Buddha left palace life his hair was simply cut very short, unlike the statues. He was nearly two metres tall and bore many marks of a mahāpurisa, a great man, making him exceptionally handsome. Yet speaking of this brings little benefit, since others cannot experience or verify it, and people with kilesas (defilements) tend to argue and deny; so respected teachers rarely speak of it in public.
