About This Answer
What are the first steps in letting go? Ajahn Dtun first asks what is to be let go of, and takes greed as the example. Letting go of greed means going against the current. Without mindfulness, people want what belongs to others and will harm or fight to get it; nations seek power and the wealth of other countries, which is why the world is so troubled.
Greed is restrained by sīla and samādhi, and by the wisdom to be content with what one has earned. If one wants more, one should seek it intelligently, with patience and effort, and within the bounds of the precepts. Strong greed breeds stinginess; generosity, giving and sharing weaken it.
He concludes that a person content with what they have is already happy, while wanting as much as others without being able to have it only brings suffering.
