About This Teaching

Metta, loving-kindness, is to be developed throughout the whole day and the whole of life, Ajahn Dtun teaches, not only in sitting meditation but in every posture. Walking outside or in a park, wish the birds and animals well. All beings are companions in birth, ageing, sickness and death; every creature wants happiness, cherishes its own life and does not wish to be harmed.

One who develops metta frequently becomes difficult to anger, because the heart naturally inclines toward goodwill. Metta is described as the counterpart or enemy of aversion, so the more it is developed the weaker anger becomes, until it disappears.

Metta spread during the day is still quite weak, he adds. It becomes strong only once the mind has been made strong and peaceful, so after sitting meditation is when it is most easily extended to other beings.
