About This Answer

What should one do when an emotion arises and there seems to be too little wisdom to let it go? Ajahn Dtun suggests recollecting the Buddha by reciting "Buddho" to calm the mind and cut off the emotion. This brings objectivity and the emotion leaves, though only temporarily.

Once the mind is peaceful, one can bring the emotion back to mind and may then have enough wisdom to release it. There is no single method; each person uses whatever skilful means work, whether wisdom born of Dhamma practice or what some would call worldly wisdom. The key is to meditate often so that wisdom can arise. He compares this to catching a fish: some use a rod, some a net, some traps, and any means that works is fine.
