About This Answer

What has a sotāpanna let go of? Ajahn Dtun explains that greed is reduced: they are content with what they have, seeking what they need honestly and lawfully. Ill will and vengefulness are gone, though anger and dissatisfaction can still arise; because they can control their emotions they do not harm the body or life of others.

Attachment to self is partly let go. For ordinary people, sickness, ageing and the break-up of the body all bring suffering. When a stream-enterer's body falls ill they are not frightened, and simply look after it as needed; as it ages or is about to die, the mind is not shaken, because it knows that the body is not the mind and the mind is not the body.

He compares this to a glass: if one knows beforehand that it will break one day, there is no suffering when it does. Having reflected in the same way on the body, one lets go of attachment to it.
