About This Answer

How often should one change a meditation object, for instance Buddho with the breath? Ajahn Dtun says that in sitting meditation it is good to stay with the breath together with Buddho, and in walking meditation one can stay with Buddho. In daily activities it is not necessary to hold the object constantly; mindfulness should simply keep watch over the mind. When busyness and scattered thinking build up, one can take some long inhalations and exhalations, or recite Buddho, to cut through the mental activity, trying this out for oneself.

He adds that skilful means arising from each person's own mindfulness and wisdom will differ, and whatever arises from one's own discernment is the best method; the methods of certain meditation masters may not suit everyone. One needs to watch the workings of one's own mind to see what remedy the kilesas, the defilements, call for. Developing mindfulness and concentration frequently brings the wisdom to resolve the suffering that arises in the heart.
