About This Answer
A meditator explains that she contemplates the body by thinking along the lines she has learned, such as the body being made of elements. Once, while using her phone and not meditating at all, she saw the body swallow saliva on its own and felt that this is what is meant by the body working by itself. Should contemplation be a deliberate effort, or should one let the mind see naturally?
Ajahn Dtun asks whether she puts her mind to her work when she works. Contemplation is the same: it must be done deliberately. That day was simply a chance occurrence, and such chances are rare. To destroy the defilements one must intend to abandon them and intend to contemplate, focusing on it as on any task that is to succeed.
Will it one day be seen naturally? Yes, he says, but only by contemplating often, using mindfulness and wisdom to teach the citta to see the impermanence and not-self nature of this body. Seeing it often, the mind will come to let go.
