On behalf of a shy daughter, a parent asks how a human being chooses its parents at rebirth. Ajahn Dtun first asks lightly whether she feels she made a bad choice, then explains that there is a definite kammic relationship that inclines one to be born to certain parents.
That connection may be strong or weak. Over long periods, even thousands of years in saṃsāra, beings sometimes meet and sometimes do not, depending on its strength. Rebirth is not random: for a consciousness to be born to a couple, there must have been some earlier connection with them. He reassures the girl that she did not come to the wrong place at the wrong time, and to be patient.
