About This Answer

A woman asks what doubt, one of the first three fetters, refers to. The interpreter relays Ajahn Dtun's reply: doubt about the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha, including doubt about accounts such as Aṅgulimāla's. Holding no doubt toward the three refuges allows the mind to advance.

Speaking of his own practice, he says he never doubted the Buddha's teaching or the stories of the noble disciples, though he learned many of those stories only recently. Having no doubt that the Buddha awakened through his own means gave him complete confidence in the Dhamma and in the noble Sangha who realised path and fruition by practising it. In his own era he took teachers such as Luang Por Chah and Luang Ta Mahā Boowa as role models, never doubting them, and as he met more arahants he came to understand each one's particular practice, without doubting their attainments.
