About This Answer
How does one know which meditation method suits one? Ajahn Dtun suggests that someone who does not yet know can experiment: a week with mindfulness of breathing, another week mentally reciting buddho, then compare the results against one's character. Those with conditioning from past practice may determine to come across the object most suited to them, while those still building their perfections must choose, sometimes rightly and sometimes not.
Choosing the breath, ānāpānasati, is already a good choice, he says, because it is a neutral object suited to all character types. One should not drop an object after a week or a month without results; lack of peace usually comes from insufficient effort and consistency, so one must keep at it patiently for a long time.
