About This Answer

If one lets go of love and hate, is that stream entry? Ajahn Dtun answers that a mind made neutral and equanimous towards love and hate is not attaching to them for the moment, but attachment to the body remains, just as some people reach deep states of concentration yet do not realise the Dhamma because their attachment has not been let go. The path is sīla, samādhi and paññā, developed so that wisdom can let go of attachment to the body and of greed, anger and sensual desire whenever they arise. As the body is let go of, these defilements weaken in proportion.

The questioner presses: does "the body" mean the physical body or the sense of self? He replies that it comes to the same thing. Reflecting on the physical body and seeing it as impermanent and not-self, the mind lets go of identifying with it as oneself, level by level. The body is then simply looked after appropriately, but the mind no longer attaches to it.
