About This Answer

Asked whether he thinks of his mother, who died when he was young, Ajahn Dtun recalls that as a small boy, when mistreated by an older brother, he would sometimes cry and think that if his mother were there, this would not happen to him. She died when he was two years and ten months old.

Only after ordaining, practising and coming to know the Dhamma did he begin dedicating merit to her every day. This body, these four elements, are received from our parents, so the merit made through practising sīla, samādhi and paññā naturally goes back to both mother and father. For his own parents, he says, he made a determination always to seek them out and teach them until they realise the Dhamma, and only then would he be satisfied.
