About This Answer

During walking meditation, what else should be observed beyond the feet, the leg movement, hardness, softness and warmth? Ajahn Dtun replies that while the mind is not yet established in samadhi (concentration or peacefulness), one should keep to a single object: the contact of the feet with the floor.

If mindfulness is still weak and attention is spread over many objects, the mind scatters instead of gathering, making it harder to unify in concentration. He compares this to a carpenter sawing wood, who watches only the point where the saw meets the wood rather than following the blade back and forth. Developing mindfulness and concentration likewise means keeping the mind one-pointed.
