About This Answer
After recent trauma made focus difficult, a meditator asks whether to stop sitting when suffering overwhelms the mind, or to force a way through. The answer is to keep sitting whether happy or unhappy, since meditation develops the skill of letting go of both suffering and happiness.
If the mind is so restless that mindfulness cannot settle on anything, it may help to do something else mindfully, then return when ready and gather mindfulness onto the object again. Patience and perseverance are needed.
Each person can find their own answers in their suffering by looking within. Because the heart is endowed with delusion, it takes suffering to be oneself, which only adds to it. Stepping back shows that moods and emotions are conditions, not the mind itself. Mindfulness and concentration are needed to see their impermanence and absence of self and let them go, and whenever suffering arises, one looks for a way to remedy it.
