About This Answer

Asked whether Buddhism has a God or creator, Ajahn Pannavaddho says the answer depends on what the word means. One can point to a chair, but not to God. Most people absorb the idea from their parents, perhaps as a big man up there, and it gradually becomes a symbol within oneself. The real question is whether anything outside oneself corresponds to that symbol. Speaking of a creator also raises hard questions about what the world is and what time is.

So one can neither say there is no God nor show that there is. A god who has no influence on us is, to us, the same as no god. Any influence one could name might be explained in other ways.

He speaks warmly of Christian morality: someone who truly practises it will be a very good person and may reach the heavens. For Buddhism, though, that is not enough, since heaven realms do not last. He cites Mother Teresa as the kind of person who goes to heaven, adding that the one most affected by doing good is oneself.
