What If Body Contemplation Makes You Tired?

About This Answer

A meditator contemplating the body each morning describes three methods: mentally removing each part onto the floor to see no self; watching parts disintegrate into earth, water, wind, fire and space, once seeing that the body's earth element is no different from a mountain's; and simply feeling hardness or movement as elements without labels. The mind had grown bored, and the questioner asks whether all three are correct.

Ajahn Dtun says all three are correct; it depends on how the mind wishes to reflect. Boredom or tiredness, however, shows the base of concentration is not yet sufficient. Those who contemplate daily with good samādhi do not find it tiring.

He repeats a familiar image: contemplation is like chopping with a knife. A blunt knife only chips at a branch without breaking it; concentration sharpens it. So rest from contemplation for a day or two and emphasise samādhi, but do not give up body contemplation altogether.
