About This Teaching
A European scientist once came to Ajahn Chah with a questionnaire: why do you meditate, how do you meditate, and what are the results? Ajahn Chah laughed and answered with questions of his own about eating: why do you eat, how do you eat, what are the results?
His point was that we eat because we are hungry, and Dhamma practice answers a mental and spiritual hunger in the same way. When the mind is suffering, Dhamma is used to calm it. Eating leaves the stomach full of food; practising leaves the heart full of Dhamma.
